About Dauphine

Dauphine Van der Velpen is an ambitious, young professional saxophone player from Belgium.

​

Dauphine is mainly working on chamber music and solo projects of contemporary, minimal and post-modern music. She believes that her playing should create a certain atmosphere and should bring an image to mind. Together with Artur Lopes, João Faustino and Renato Almeida, she forms Tantrum Saxophone Quartet. Next to quartet playing, Dauphine also collaborated often with percussion on temporarily projects. Dauphine is eagerly working on new personal projects.

In 2021 Dauphine played the Willem-Twee Chamber Music Competition as part of Tantrum Saxophone Quartet, who won this event. In 2020 Dauphine had the opportunity to do an internship at Antwerp Symphony Orchestra on the department Education and Outreach.
In 2019 Dauphine played at the commemoration of 75 years since the liberation of Breendonk, Belgium, where she played before His Majesty King Filip of Belgium.

Dauphine started saxophone lessons at age nine in Ostend, Belgium. Next to classical saxophone, Dauphine took interest in Jazz and Light Music through the years: she took lessons in jazz saxophone, jazz piano and big band. Dauphine participated in the Vlamo competition and Solisten aan Zee as a teenager.
In 2016, Dauphine got accepted for the bachelor program at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where she studied three years with Raf Minten, Koen Maas and Rik Vaneyghen. After her graduation in 2019 in Ghent, Dauphine moved to Tilburg, The Netherlands. She was accepted to the Master of Music program to study with Ties Mellema and Andreas Van Zoelen at Fontys Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Next to the lessons with Ties and Andreas, Dauphine also received lessons from Arno Bornkamp, Leon Berendse, Marcel Andriessen, Geert Baeckelandt, Juani Palop and more.
In 2021, Dauphine graduated as Master of Music and enrolled in the Master of Arts and Education, shortened trajectory, at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.

Next to playing saxophone, Dauphine also conducts and teaches. She took conducting lessons with Dirk Brossé and Bart Picqueur.

Dauphine participated in various masterclasses and international events with: Ryo Noda, Pawel Gusnar, Gordan Tudor, Claude Delangle, Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, Cedel Saxophone Quartet, Axes Saxophone Quartet, Raaf Hekkema, and more.
